The role of ultraviolet (UV) or ultraviolet LEDs has been found in combating corona viruses. One study claims that UV LEDs may be effective in virus-freeing corona-infected surfaces. In this way the infection of dangerous corona can be prevented.
According to a study published in the ACS Photonics Journal, ultraviolet light is used extensively as a disinfectant. However, its widespread impact against the new corona virus is yet to be clarified. “In the medical profession, keeping personal protective equipment, surfaces, and floors infection-free is important,” said Christian Jolner, a researcher at the University of California, USA.
Jolner is working towards upgrading UV LED technology for sanitization. Referring to various types of ultraviolet light, he explained that our Earth receives UV-A and UV-B light from the Sun for critical uses. While rare UV-C light is an option to purify air and water. Germs can be neutralized through this light. UV-C light is currently considered to be the most relevant in eliminating infection. However, this light is harmful to human skin. Therefore, more advanced technology is needed.
