Ambedkar Jayanti 2021: Story of a king of India, with the help of whom Ambedkar went to study abroad

Today is the 130th birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the author of the constitution of the country.

Ambedkar Jayanti: Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in a village in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh.

Ambedkar, who had witnessed economic and social discrimination since childhood, started studying in odd circumstances.

Not only this, Baba Saheb had to face a lot of discrimination in school. Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar’s contribution to the upliftment and awareness of Dalit society is incredible.

When Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar was young, he had to go abroad for higher education. In such a situation, the economic crisis was a big problem in front of them.

He was helped by a Maharaja to realize his dream of studying abroad.

In the year 1913, Ambedkar applied to the Baroda Maharaja for financial help to study at Columbia University.

When the then Maharaja of Baroda, Sayajirao Gaekwad III, reached Ambedkar’s application,

he accepted it and started giving annual scholarships. With the help of this scholarship, it became easy for Ambedkar to study abroad.

When young Ambedkar returned from study abroad, he was made a member of the Legislative Assembly of Baroda State.

Along with this, a law was made in the state that Scheduled Caste people can also contest elections in the state.

The schemes being run in Baroda state for the backward classes, women as well as the economically weaker people,

also had an impact on Ambedkar, which was seen during the framing of the constitution.

Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III was also ahead in patronizing the big personalities related to the fields of education, art, dance, etc. in his state.

Maharaja Sayajirao was financially supported by many celebrities including Jyotiba Phule, Dadabhai Naoroji, Lokmanya Tilak, Maharishi Aravind.

Along with this, many schools opened in the state focusing on girls’ education and made primary education compulsory free of cost.
