Cairo, ep. Egypt’s Ministry of Health has confirmed 1,691 new cases of the corona virus, including 97 deaths, the figure being the highest toll of cases reported in the country in a day.
Since the first virus case reported in Egypt in February, 46,289 COVID-19 infections and 1,672 deaths have been officially recorded. Egypt has the highest death rate in the Arab world and the third highest in the Middle East after Iran and Turkey.
The government has opposed a complete lockdown in an effort to keep the economy running. Authorities in the Arab world’s most populous country have reduced nighttime curfews and plans to reopen airports for tourism next month.
