Day 1 Summary and Score Table

India

Australia 1st 67/7 (27 Overs) Alex Carey (19*)

India’s Innings

The Indian batting lineup faced early setbacks, reduced to 64/5 after the opening session.

  • A key partnership between Rishabh Pant (38 off 45) and debutant Nitish Reddy (22 off 48) helped India recover slightly.
  • Australia’s pace trio, Josh Hazlewood (4/32), Mitchell Starc (3/45) and Pat Cummins (2/50), tore through the Indian top order.

Australia Response:

Australia’s batting had to face similar tasks on a seam-friendly track.

  • Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery spell accounted for 4 of the 7 Australian wickets.
  • Mohammed Siraj (2/17) and Harshit Rana (1/33) supported Bumrah well.

Major Events of the Day End

  • Josh Hazlewood’s early strikes – Hazlewood’s ability to exploit the pitch’s movement left India reeling early on.
  • Rishabh Pant and Nitish Reddy’s Partnership – The only notable highlight in India’s batting, however, was their crucial 48-run stand.
  • Jasprit Bumrah’s killer spell – Bumrah’s pace and precision stunned the Australians by sending back David Warner, Usman Khawaja, and Steve Smith.

Pitch Report

The surface of Perth Stadium presented consistent seam movement during the day, thus complicating run-scoring opportunities. Average deviation of 0.793 degrees left batters guessing and ultimately led to a combined batting average of mere 10.64 runs per wicket.

Day 2 Expect Some Things

With Australia lagging behind by 83 runs and merely three wickets left, India’s bowlers are poised to conclude the innings expeditiously. The outcome of the match may depend significantly on India’s performance in their second innings, as the pitch is expected to continue favoring bowlers.

Venkatesh Iyer: The Dynamic Indian All-Rounder

  • Full Name: Venkatesh Rajasekaran Iyer
  • Date of Birth: December 25, 1994
  • Birthplace: Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India
  • Role: All-rounder
  • Batting Style: Left-handed
  • Bowling Style: Right-arm medium pace

Venkatesh Iyer came onto the scene like a whirlwind, in the Indian cricket team as a complete batting all-rounder, who played a significant role both with bat and ball. Sooner or later, he drew everybody’s eyes with his excellent stroke play and further proved his medium-pace bowling skills. No sooner had he entered the IPL scene during his second season of 2021 than cricketing circles spoke about him. His performance made him quite indispensable for his side and before he knew it, he had entered the Indian national team, especially in the shorter formats. Iyer is now one of the brightest all-rounders Indian cricket has to offer and can shine equally in all three formats.

Early Life and Domestic Career

Venkatesh Iyer was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He moved heavily into studies after which he devoted full time to cricketing later on. He completed his ACCA degree and obtained his Chartered Accountant while still playing the sport he loved, but the passion for cricket soon engulfed all his time, and he gradually made his ascent up the ranks of the local teams in Madhya Pradesh.

Personal Career Achievements

It was in the domestic circuit that Iyer had his early experience of Madhya Pradesh cricket and he gave a good account of himself as a tough left-hander and an accurate medium-pacer. Aggressive batting in one-day and T20 matches and economical overs during crunch situations quickly catapulted him into prominence in the domestic circuit, making him indispensable in both forms.

Kolkata Knight Riders (2021) – IPL Debut

Venkatesh Iyer had his important moment in the second leg of the 2021 IPL season, playing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). At the top of the order, he drew eyeballs with a breezy and aggressive brand of cricket, racking up runs and taking on a few of the world’s best bowlers quite fearlessly. It was his performance which helped KKR reach the finals of IPL 2021, where the game displayed his attacking streak well, particularly during the powerplay.

Notable IPL Performances

  • He was quite instrumental in KKR’s victorious journey in the 2021 season, contributing to many match-winning innings himself.
  • He made a crucial half-century in the qualifier match which propelled KKR into the final.
  • Iyer’s remarkable strike rate and composure in the face of pressure underscored his promise to thrive at elevated levels.

International Career

T20I Career

India had summoned him to the Indian T20I side at the fag end of 2021, following his impressive show in the IPL. Known for power-hitting ability, he had provided India with an essential option to bat down the order apart from being a part-time medium-pacer, thus bringing balance to the side.

His aggressive approach and desire to score quick runs match the Indian team’s strategy in limited-overs formats. While Iyer has been used as a middle-order batter, who can speed up the run rate and perform the bowling role when required, he is still in the early stages of his international career. However, his versatility makes him a great asset to add an all-rounder option to India.

ODI Career

After his T20I debut, Iyer got opportunities in ODI cricket and faced challenges while further testing his role as a finisher. Though he is still in the process of building himself in the ODI setup, Iyer has shown glimpses of his capability as a powerful hitter in the lower order, often helping India post competitive totals in close games.

Important Skills and Playing Style

  • Batting: The left-handed batsman Iyer is known for stroke play. His true strength lies in the amazing ability of scoring quickly, particularly in powerplays and death overs. He has an intrinsic flair for finding boundaries and can easily change gears as per the situation, thereby being a versatile batsman also in the T20 and ODI format.
  • Cricket: Though not necessarily a first-choice bowler, Iyer’s right arm at medium pace can be effective in providing his team with the balance it need. He can bowl tight overs and take important wickets over the middle overs of the limited-overs game, which adds a valuable option for his captain to try out more combinations with him.
  • Fielding: He stands out as an agile fielder, boasting of a very powerful throwing arm that makes him invaluable in the outfield. His tremendous athleticism and fitness have been big assets, adding to India’s overall fielding unit.
